The 30 Healthiest Foods

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth: The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why

I have this book. I thought-wow that would be fun for the blog. But geez, 150 is a lot. Its really thick & I'm sorry to say that I'm only about 10 pages in. I'm sorry, but the Hunger Games trilogy will not wait! Now if you don't get some perspective from those books, you might be a lost cause. Anywho, luckily, in my inbox yesterday, I got a pared down version of that list from Real Simple. 30's a good start I think.

I was pleased to see that I'm already eating most of these & I think you probably are too. At least I hope so. If not, good thing I'm sharing so you can start! Here's their list. To see the complete slideshow click HERE. I highlighted the ones we eat on the regular.

1. Mushrooms
2. Barley - I did just make
Mushroom Barley Soup but I don't use it regularly.
3. Walnuts
4. Whole-Grain Pasta
5. Peanut and Almond Butters (All-Natural)
6. Oatmeal (Steel-Cut or Old-Fashioned) - not me, the kids & Brian
7. Quinoa
8. Skim Milk-I dislike milk & don't drink it-rarely did. Brian buys it & he only buys 2%.
I would prefer they don't drink it at all, but I pick my battles.
9. Almonds
10. Lentils
11. Blueberries
12. Bulgur
13. Eggs
14. Sardines-maybe someday, but not yet.
15. Spinach
16. Kiwi
17. Wild Salmon
18. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
19. Chicken Breasts (Boneless, Skinless) -them, not me obviously
20. Kale
21. Avocado
22. Kidney Beans
23. Sweet Potatoes
24. Chard - I love chard, I should make it more often!
25. Edamame - It gets occasional use, but that's about it.
26. Pumpkin
27. Oranges
28. Nonfat Greek Yogurt
29. Broccoli
30. Black Beans

22 out of 30-not too shabby.

Tuesday night we had black bean quesadillas. Last night, everybody ate something different. BabyGirl was home sick so she had grapes & Sprite. I know, nice parenting, but she's sick, so whatever. All the boys had ham & cheese omelets (eggs). With too much ham apparently. See, they're never happy!

But the meal I was (of course) most excited about was mine. I planned this over the weekend & was so excited to eat it! Turkish Lentils & Chickpeas over quinoa topped with garlic sauteed kale. I'm sure if I looked in my big book, it would tell me all about the benefits of the other ingredients too.

Anyway, while I was eating my quinoa, I was thinking about how much I love it, I think it could replace mashed potatoes for me. Really! But tomorrow, I think I'm going to have it in a breakfast-y way. I don't love oatmeal (gasp) so I think this is a great alternative. Its a complete protein after all, so it behooves me to eat more of it. I also see it as extremely versatile, like my beloved Greek yogurt.

See how easy it is to eat just a small number of the "Healthiest foods on Earth"? How many do you eat regularly?
