They say that turkey may not have been served at the original Thanksgiving dinner. Hmmmm.
I am consumed by all things Thanksgiving! Last night I put the turkey in the fridge to thaw. Today, I finished up the shopping, picked up my pies, finalized my timeline & got my mental to-do list down on paper! I'm usually a pretty unorganized person-if you've been to my house, you know this. But I AM getting better! The one thing I am always organized about is Thanksgiving Day. And even then things usually go awry. For example, last year we had gutted our upstairs (main) kitchen 3 days before Thanksgiving (we're smart like that) & we lost the chicken base we use for gravy. Brian ran out & tried to find an open store that sold it. The only store that was open was a convenience store that didn't have it so he ended up buying multiple packs of ramen noodles
for the seasoning packets inside! It actually worked pretty well, a bit salty, but it was gravy! We ate dinner at about 9 PM. (I bought new gravy base about 2 months ago.)
This year, I'm also changing things up a bit with a multi course serving instead of everything coming out at once & sitting down to gorge on everything on one plate. The timeline is imperative for this, but I'm not totally convinced it will work. I am excited to try though. And I'm making a vat of fall sangria, so ya know, whatever happens, well, let's just say I won't overreact!
Anyway, here's our (pretty simple) menu for the big day:
Apps: cream cheese crab cups
1st Course: Cauliflower Soup (Janet's making this)
2nd course: Spinach/Arugula Salad with Bosc Pears, dried power berries, blue cheese and toasted walnuts
3rd Course: Individual Cheesy Potatoes
4th course: Brussels Sprout Hash with carmelized shallots
Main: turkey (or the vegetarian equivalent)
stuffing (Janet)
mashed potatoes
gravy
lemon scented green beans with wild mushrooms
buttered corn
cranberry relish with apple cider
rolls w/ butter
Drinks:
Fall sangria
Hot spiced apple cider (with rum for adults)
Apple cinnamon herbal tea
Decaf coffee
beer
wine
Dessert:
Pumpkin Pecan Pie
Caramel Apple Pie
Pumpkin frozen custard with caramel sauce & gingersnaps
I also decided to try out an online book club. The book to be read next is Quantum Wellness
. I picked it up today from the library and can't wait to curl up with it! After my to-do list for today is done of course!
I don't think I'll be back until my weekend of food, family, fun, jammies, movies & relaxation is over. I hope your holiday will be wonderful too!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
