Think Before You Pink!

As you probably know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What you may not know is my mother died of breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 56.

And although I support the Susan G. Komen Foundation & others, I do not buy just anything that's pink. Everywhere you turn, you see pink, but just because you buy something pink or it has the pink ribbon, doesn't mean much if they only send 1 penny from the $29.99 item! Or maybe they actually do nothing at all and keep your money. Please just make sure your donations are what you think they are!

Need help? Start here:
Think Before You Pink, a project of Breast Cancer Action, launched in 2002 in response to the growing concern about the overwhelming number of pink ribbon products and promotions on the market. The campaign calls for more transparency and accountability by companies that take part in breast cancer fundraising, and encourages consumers to ask critical questions about pink ribbon promotions.

Pinkwasher: (pink’-wah-sher) noun. A company that purports to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribboned product, but manufactures products that are linked to the disease.

Eli Lilly is now the sole manufacturer of rBGH — the artificial growth hormone given to dairy cows that increases people’s risk of cancer. Eli Lilly also manufactures breast cancer treatment medications and a pill that “reduces the risk” of breast cancer.

Um, to that I have to say-WTF?

As you see, on the right column of my blog, there's my Sherpani logo. Sherpani is such a great company-I love their bags, as you probably know. And in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they're donating 20% of sales-not profits of 6 of their pink bags!

And that's not all! For my fellow bloggers-you may also notice my new Breast Cancer badge to the right! During the month of October, when you publish this “My Blog Cares” badge on your blog or website, Diets in Review will make a $5 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

'Our fundraising goal is $500*, and this year, VML, a digital marketing agency, has generously agreed to match that amount. For each $5 donation you help us contribute to NBCF, VML will donate $5. So you can help us raise $10 for breast cancer simply by placing this badge on your blog. It’s a win-win-win-win… you get the idea! '

What an easy way to help!
