Detox your kitchen-5 easy swaps

The May/June issue of Vegetarian Times is one of their best yet, I think. I'm planning on trying a few recipes from this one. Their article, Detox your kitchen 5 inexpensive upgrades is great. Just simple swaps can reduce your toxic exposure.

1.  Do you keep filtered water in your fridge? I do. I recently bought a second one (Brita 42412 Atlantis Water Pitcher) for the upstairs. It's supposedly BPA free and the filter is recyclable. AND it was on sale at Target for $18! I love a deal!

2.  Reusable scrubbies are an eco friendly way to go. But I like these even better. They're biodegradable and compostable! They come completely flat. Also available at Target, but what isn't, really.

3.  Bamboo cooking utensils. I actually have Olivewood I got at guess where? I like them but they can't soak in water for long, and I'm a soaker. They also can't go in the dishwasher-big drawback. They are pretty, though. I still have my metal & nylon ones.
4.  Glass containers. Not too long ago I packed up all of my plastics and gave them to my sister. She was grateful & I got to replace everything. Plastic storage containers seem to multiply rapidly. I went to a second hand store called Lakewood Home Furnishings and bought a bunch of old school glass casseroles with glass lids in all different sizes. They work fabulously in the oven, freezer, fridge & microwave. I love them all! I have a couple like this one I got for like $3.00. You can get it here: Anchor Hocking 81932OBL5 Oven Basics Casserole with Cover
5.  Cookware. Years ago I got a new cookware set for Christmas by KitchenAid. They were Hard-Anodized Nonstick which I believe is way better than teflon. I also have a few cast iron pieces that I use. Cookware can be a fortune, so do your research and wait for a sale. Unless you can find somebody else to buy it for you, then good for you! If you buy quality it should last a lifetime.
