"If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."
~Thomas Jefferson, 1781
Things are getting out hand.
The Cleveland Water Department is requesting a 50% to 80% increase in water rates by the year 2015. Sewer rate increases will follow -- and this will be going on all over the country. The good news is that we should have adequate water supplies unlike many areas of the country -- including many key agricultural areas.
The National Inflation Association is warning of hyperinflation for food prices this decade. These are some of their predictions for food prices by 2020:
Corn: $11 per ear
Bread: $23 per loaf
Soy Milk: $24 per quart
Sugar: $62 per 32 ounce bag
Orange Juice: $45 per 64 ounce bottle
Folger's Coffee: $77 per 11.5 ounce can
Hershey's Candy Bar: $15 per 1.55 ounce bar
All of these are scary points, but the biggest shocker was the fact that Whole Foods recently came to an agreement with Monsanto and now say that they will no longer criticize genetically modified foods. What??!!
Well, they can come & build their Whole Foods here on the West Side, but I'll be buying my produce, eggs & milk from my local farmers in addition to growing my own in my backyard. I also plan on checking out a great new store coming soon-Earth Fare. Can't wait-check out their awesome website & Facebook page. Meal planning helps to save money & making things homemade is of course a great way to stretch your dollars. I also want to learn to can to extend our food stores. I have plenty of room to stockpile, so why not!
We don't have to take it lying down!
What are you doing to combat rising food costs?
