I've been thinking about a cheese steak for a while now & was wondering how I cold make a vegetarian version. The obvious choice? Portobellos!
2 big sweet onions in EVOO, S&P & garlic powder-till soft-remove from the pan
Thinly slice the mushrooms
Saute with pepper & EVOO-no salt! Towards the end, splash in some Worcestershire sauce
When the mushrooms are done-add back in the onions to warm it all together. Add in a little butter if you wish.
Load onto a soft bun with provolone on the bottom to melt.
I served it with Salt & Vinegar Pop Chips. Fries would be too heavy.
So, was it everything I thought it would be? Pretty darn close. Its not nearly as good as with steak, but it definitely cured my craving. You're not going to win over a carnivore with this meal, but vegetarians would like it, I think!
How did the rest of them like it? The boys all thought 'there was something missing'. BabyGirl said it was 'amazing'. Would I make it again-oh yes. But I guess the boys want their meat!
Note to self: STOP asking Brian at the dinner table what he thinks of the meal! He may rave or he may say its not great at which point Bubba will stop eating immediately.
I also happened to pick up another bag (or 3) of the Caramel Apple Kisses. I made Apple spice muffins and baked a kiss into the middle. They are really good! Those things are going to kill me!
