As you should know by now, Thursday is BFD-breakfast for dinner. Tonight, Bubba requested french toast. I have to tell ya, I hate making french toast. And pancakes really. I hate standing over the stove making 2 or 3 pieces of something at a time! I hate it. You eat in shifts that way. If I can dump it all in a casserole dish and bake it, I most certainly will. Now I've been eyeballing those Caramel Apple Spice kisses for days now. I've gathered some ideas. Tonight is the first experiment.
First I mixed up my 'custard'. Its not really a custard, its 8 eggs, about 1 cup milk, cinnamon, about 3/4 cup of sugar & 1/2 cup of yogurt to make a custard consistency.
I cut my french baguette into chunks and put half of them into the casserole. Then I had D dice up some organic apples, 3 to be exact. I poured the custard mixture over the bread and pushed it down so it was all coated. Then I unwrapped about 15 kisses and places them around and dumped on about 1/2 of the apples.
Next layer-the rest of the bread. Pour over the custard, cover with apples and about 15 more kisses. Smash it all down so the custard wets everything. I also sprinkled each layer with a little raw sugar & cinnamon.
I covered it and baked it for about 45 minutes at 350. Then I removed the lid and baked it for another 30 minutes. Make sure its cooked in the middle.
Remove & let cool for a few minutes, then dig in. Serve with maple syrup if you are so inclined.
Oh and don't forget to spray your dish with non stick spray like I did! Cleaning that should be fun.
Everyone really liked this dish. The kisses were a subtle but awesome addition. Some extra caramel would be a good addition too, I think. I hope you try it soon!
