Today for a snack, I had some leftover salsa. Not only was it delicious, it was good for me! The beans & tomatoes are on the list of cancer fighting foods from The American Institute for Cancer Research. They've also released their recent findings, below.
According to just-released figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.4 million more Americans became obese between 2007 and 2009.
Approximately 26.7 percent of the US adult population, or 72.5 million people, are now obese.
Experts at the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) said today that this increase may well result in a corresponding increase in the national cancer rate in years to come.
Although no single food can protect you against cancer, scientists believe that the combination of foods in a predominantly plant-based diet may help. And since plant-based diets come with reduced calorie content, their benefits are compounded with nutritional benefits and weight loss.
AICR's second expert report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective, has confirmed the relationship between excess body fat and increased cancer risk. According to the scientific literature, there is convincing evidence that body fat increases risk for cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, colon and rectum, edometrium, kidney and breast (in postmenopausal women). Because of the overwhelming evidence, AICR recommends maintaining a healthy weight throughout life to best reduce your chances of developing cancer.
Scary stuff, I tell ya. Back in a bit with dinner!
